Basic page operations

Hi there. For an AEM Sites content author, some of the day to day activities involve creating, managing and organizing content. For a content author, in addition to creating and editing pages, AEM provides additional page management options. Let’s take a look at the available options. From AEM homepage navigate to AEM Sites console and open the weekend sample site. AEM provides different options to view your page list. Currently we have the view mode selected as list view. In the list view you can notice certain page properties that get exposed in a tabular format. You can quickly customize what properties needs to displayed in the list view. Click on the view list option and then select view settings. Page properties are categorized as page metadata, translation and analytic data. For this video let’s stick to the metadata information only and select the page properties that you’re interested in and then save your changes. Now, in the AEM Sites console you should be able to view the selected page properties added to your sites UI console. Switching from list view to another view type limits the page properties that gets displayed. So if you prefer to have a detailed page information view you can use the list view and then configure the view settings accordingly. Content authors can perform operations either on a single page, or perform a bulk operation for selected pages. Let’s check out the options for a single page first. In the list view select a sample site page by clicking on the checkbox. You can notice a toolbar that gets displayed on the top, providing the list of operations that can be performed on this page. The create new button offers a variety of operations for a selected page. You can initiate a workflow for your page and choose a workflow model and proceed with a workflow execution right from the sites console. You can create and save a version of your page. Page version helps you track your changes and review them later if needed. You can create a new page, site, live copy or launch using the create new option. Creating a CSV report enables you to export information about your pages to a CSV file on your local system. Select the properties to export and then you can choose the pattern path for the report. And you can also choose the depth of the subpages, or children, that needs to be included in your report. Let’s click the create button and you can obtain a CSV file that gets downloaded to your local system. This report can then be used for offline purposes. From the top toolbar you can open a selected page to edit it. Properties option gives you access to a page’s metadata. You can edit and save your changes in the same window. AEM allows you to lock your page so that no one else can modify the content for your page. Securing access to a page is useful when you are making a lot of edits to one specific page or when you need to freeze a page for a short while. Once locked, the page view information within the sites console gets updated for other users making this page no longer accessible for editing to other users. You can copy a selected page and paste it in the same content hierarchy or navigate within the content structure to paste it somewhere else in your AEM Sites console. Note that copy creates another instance of the page. The copy operation for a page is performed at the same level as where the page resides, AEM uses the same title for the new page but generates a new name for the page. If the page paste operation is performed in a different content folder then you can retain the same name as its original page name. Using the move operation, a page can be moved from its initial content structure to an entirely new content structure. When you perform a move operation you are provided with a window that details the other site’s pages from where your page is being referenced. You have an option to rename your page title and name when you perform a move operation. Using the path browser you can select the destination folder where you would like to move it and confirm your move. If your page is not already published, you can use the quick publish option to make it available to external users immediately. If you want to publish or unpublish a page at a specific time and not immediately, you can plan to operate using the manage publication option. Using this option, you can either perform an immediate publish and unpublish operation or schedule it for a later date and time. Schedule later provides an option to select a date and time when you would like to get your content published or unpublished. Proceeding with the next steps, you can also add additional content to your list or get a quick glimpse of what is going to get publish when you trigger this operation.

In the next step you can provide a workflow title for quickly identifying your scheduled activation if needed. Publish later would save your publication information and invoke the workflow based on the time and date scheduled. You can also delete a page if it is no longer needed using the delete page option. Last, but not the least, you can reorder a page in the list view using the rearrange handle. This option is only available in the list view and changes made here gets applied to all other views. We have seen some of the operations for a single page. This time let’s select a few pages and see the list of options available. In the create a new option we have a limited set of permitted operations for bulk updates. Edit option opens all the page in a separate tab for editing. You can perform a copy operation, but a move operation is not possible for bulk updates. Let’s switch from the list view to the card view. From making a page selection, you can hover over a page card and view some of the quick action operations visible within the card layout. Selecting a card should make the additional options available in the top toolbar. If you would like to understand where else in your AEM site your page is being referenced, you can view that information by clicking on the rail selector and choosing the references option. The reference provides the source, the language copies and other content references for your page. From the rail selector dropdown, select the timeline option and you can view a history of events associated with your page and you can filter them.
