Adobe’s support for Enterprise Mobile Management (EMM) of Adobe products is evolving. Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application Management (MAM) is possible on both Android and iOS, and enterprise can easily provide a secure and productive mobile experience to employees by separating work data from personal data. In addition to controlling what Adobe product versions are rolled out via your 3rd party MDM software, you can also control specific features through your vendor console.


Acrobat Reader on iOS and Android are currently the only mobile apps which support EMM.

Personal vs. work files

One of the major benefits to EMM is that it allows users to keep work and personal files separate. IT can implement security and other policies differently for managed files without impacting unmanaged files. Work data is part of a managed profile.

  • On Android, the storage area for this profile is isolated from the primary profile (the personal profile) to ensure data separation.

  • On iOS, enterprise IT controls file access via profile policies. For example, admins might use Intune to prevent copying a file subject to a work profile into a users, personal Dropbox account.

AppConfig support

A number of vendors support AppConfig–a standards-based framework that streamlines app configuration and deployment via participating EMM vendors.

  • For Android, support is built in. Simply load the app and supported features appear in your vendor console.

  • For iOS, Adobe provides an AppConfig-compliant XML configuration file that allows IT to manage Acrobat with any EMM product that supports AppConfig; for example, Intune, MobileIron, and so on. Simply load the XML into your 3rd party EMM vendor console to view the supported configurations.

AppConfig support is built-in, automatic, and transparent to enterprise admins. Follow the configuration and deployment instructions provided by your EMM vendor.

Migrating the installer

Adobe always recommends keeping end users up-to-date with the latest apps. They provide more features as well as better performance and security.

In particular, Acrobat for Intune was a separate installer prior to August 2019. In August, Acrobat’s standalone Intune installers were replaced by the standard installer which incorporates Intune capabilities; that is, there is no longer a separate Intune installer. With Acrobat Reader’s integrated Intune support, there are several ways admins can migrate existing Intune users. Admins can:

  • Target and push the app to the end user device.

  • Place the app on the MSFT Company Portal app so user can download it.

  • Inform end users they can directly download from the new app from the App or Play store.


Are there any specific licensing requirements specific to MAM or MDM managed products?

No. The customer gets what they pay for and the installer is not relevant.

Are the differences in feature configuration and deployment support for phones vs. tablets?

No. For example, Acrobat on iPad and iPhone are managed via Intune in the same way. In some cases, features may vary across platforms or devices.

If our organization distributes the Acrobat installer, is a distribution agreement required?
