Adobe cloud storage overview

Adobe cloud storage is a cloud-based storage solution that serves as the central repository for assets across Adobe enterprise products. The Workfront and Frame.io integration is built on Adobe cloud storage, enabling seamless collaboration and asset management between these platforms.

This storage option also paves the way for future asset management integrations with other Adobe products, such as Adobe Creative Cloud.

Key Features

  • Unified storage layer: Adobe cloud storage acts as a shared storage backend for Workfront, Frame.io, Document Cloud, and Creative Cloud. This enables seamless collaboration and asset management across these platforms.

  • Content supply chain enablement: Adobe cloud storage is a foundational component for Adobe’s Content Supply Chain vision, allowing teams to manage work-in-progress assets without the need for manual downloads or reupload in various Adobe applications.

  • Centralized permissions and access: Adobe cloud storage supports enterprise-level access controls, integrating with Adobe IMS (Identity Management System) for secure and scalable user permissions.

  • End-to-end asset visibility: Assets stored in Adobe cloud storage can be surfaced and managed directly in Workfront, Frame.io, and Creative Cloud apps, providing consistent metadata, versioning, and audit trails.

  • Integration with review and approval workflows: Adobe cloud storage enables creative review and approval workflows by serving as the source of truth for all assets, ensuring that feedback and approvals are tracked centrally.

  • Scalable storage and quota management: Adobe cloud storage offers scalable storage options and unified quota tracking across Adobe products.

Integration with review and approval workflows

The Workfront and Frame.io integration leverages Adobe cloud storage to provide a unified review and approval experience. This integration allows project coordinators to manage projects and plan work in Workfront while creatives, marketers, and stakeholders can review and approve assets in Frame.io. This ensures that all stakeholders have access to the latest versions of assets, and feedback is centralized in one place.

For more information about the Workfront and Frame.io integration, see Unified review and approval overview.

Differences between Adobe cloud storage and legacy Workfront storage

Existing Workfront environments have a combination of Adobe cloud storage and legacy Workfront storage. Any objects created prior to the release of Adobe cloud storage uses legacy Workfront storage.

Once you enable Adobe cloud storage in your environment, you can create both Adobe cloud storage and legacy Workfront storage projects.

NOTE
Net new environments have Adobe cloud storage enabled by default and do not have the option to use legacy Workfront storage.

Documents

New Documents area

The new Documents area is a unified documents area redesigned for Adobe cloud storage.

This updated interface simplifies navigation, improves clarity, and makes it easier for teams to manage reviews and approvals in one unified environment. For more information, see the Documents area overview.

New document permission model

IMPORTANT
In Adobe cloud storage, document permissions work differently than in legacy Workfront storage. Documents inherit permissions from the project, task, or issue they are linked to.

Documents cannot be shared individually. Instead, the system automatically generates a folder for each task or issue and inherits permissions from the task or issue. Any documents uploaded to the task or issue are stored in that generated folder.

For more information about the new document permission model, see Object permissions and access level overview for the Adobe cloud storage model.

Linked objects on folders

At the project level, system-generated folders display a linked object. The folder is automatically named the same as the task or issue it belongs to. Linked folders are how the system knows which task or issue the folder should be seen on.

For more information, see How document permissions work.

Workfront objects

The table below compares the features of Adobe cloud storage and legacy Workfront storage for Workfront objects.

Workfront objects include portfolios, programs, projects, templates, tasks, and issues.

Adobe cloud storage
Legacy Workfront storage
  • Uses Adobe cloud storage
  • Integrated with Frame.io
  • Uses the new Documents experience
  • Enforces strict naming conventions
  • Direct document sharing isn’t available
  • Documents are available in other Adobe products like Frame.io and Creative Cloud
  • Uses Workfront storage
  • Uses the proofing viewer
  • Supports individual document sharing

Move, copy, and convert objects

You can move, copy, and convert Workfront objects between like storage models. For example, you can move a task from an Adobe cloud storage project to another Adobe cloud storage project. You cannot move a task from an Adobe cloud storage project to a legacy Workfront storage project.

These actions are available from the More menu on a task or issue. Each action respects document integrity, permission inheritance, and Adobe cloud storage rules.

Enable Adobe cloud storage

You must be on a version of Workfront that supports Adobe cloud storage. If your organization is not already on a supported version, contact your Adobe account representative.

For information about enabling Adobe cloud storage in your environment, see Enable Adobe cloud storage for your organization.

NOTE
New customers have Adobe cloud storage enabled by default and do not have the option to use legacy Workfront storage.

Adobe cloud storage in sandbox environments

Adobe cloud storage is available in Workfront sandbox environments so you can test it before enabling it in production. However, the Frame.io viewer is not available in sandbox, so the full unified review and approval experience must be validated in production.

If you have a Custom Refresh Sandbox, you must refresh it after upgrading to a version of Workfront that supports Adobe cloud storage to access Adobe cloud storage functionality in the sandbox. For more information, see The Adobe Workfront Custom Refresh Sandbox environment.

Considerations

  • It is possible for Workfront to become out of sync with Frame.io or Creative Cloud, such as an asset being deleted in Workfront but still appearing in Frame.io, contact Workfront support to have your environment resynced.
