New commenting experience release activity

IMPORTANT
The information in this article refers to features that were released during the beta phase for the new commenting experience.
The beta program for the new commenting experience started in April 2023 and ended in October 2023, with the October 2023 release.

All features included in the new commenting experience have been available to all customers in the Production environment since April 11, 2024.

New commenting experience location and release timeline

The new commenting experience brings a new design to the Updates section of Workfront objects.

Features released during the beta period

The features documented in this section are now available to all customers and in all environments.

The following features were added to the commenting experience during the beta phase, between the 23.2 release (April 6, 2023) and the Fourth Quarter 2023 release (October 26, 2023).

Features released after the close of the beta program were messaged in the current release pages at the time of their release.

The following information refers to the release activity on a weekly basis, starting with the most recent update.

Week of October 16, 2023

Add the “on behalf of < user name >” information when commenting while logged in as another user

While redesigning the commenting experience, we had removed the “on behalf of < user name >” indicator when a Workfront or group administrator added comments while logged in as another user. This information has now been restored.

Week of September 11, 2023

The new commenting experience captures information starting with January 1, 2019

NOTE
This limitation was removed after November 28, 2023. For more information, see First Quarter 2024 release overview.

Projects, tasks, issues, and documents display updates starting with January 1, 2019 now. Prior to this enhancement, the new commenting experience captured only updates from June 2022 for these objects.

Week of August 21, 2023

Change timestamp format on the Comments tab

We have updated the timestamp format of the user comments in the Comments tab of the new commenting stream. As part of this change, comments from the current year no longer display the year in the timestamp. Hovering over a timestamp displays the full date, including the year.

The changes do not affect system updates in the System Activity tab.

New commenting experience for additional objects

The new commenting experience will be available for the following objects, shortly after the 23.3 release to Production: template tasks, templates, timesheets, teams, users, programs, portfolios.

This will be the only commenting experience for these objects, as the legacy commenting experience is removed when you access them.

New design update for the new commenting stream

We have redesigned the new commenting stream to give it a more updated look-and-feel. Some of the improvements are:

  • The content of the commenting stream is centered on the page, rather that occupying the entire width of the page.

  • The More menu icon is relocated to the top right corner of the comment, rather than next to the Like button.

  • The Like and Reply buttons are now positioned next to each other.

  • The Log Time button has been relocated in the upper-right corner of the commenting area.

  • The Add reply prompt was added to prompt users to add a reply to an existing one.

  • There is a separation line between each comment thread

The new commenting experience is the default experience for projects, tasks, issues, and documents

We are making the new commenting experience the default experience for the following objects: projects, tasks, issues, and documents. The legacy commenting experience will remain as an alternative option when accessing these objects.

To support this change, we also renamed the “Commenting Beta” toggle to “New commenting”.

Avatar improvements when tagging users in an update

To give you better visibility into which users are tagged in an update, we now display the names of the users (up to two users) that are tagged in an update. For more information, see Tag others in updates.

Add emojis to an update

You can now add emojis to a comment using a Rich Text toolbar option in the new commenting experience.

Automatically tag all thread participants

A comment owner is now tagged automatically in a thread. Prior to this update, only the users who were tagged either by using the “@name” tags or by adding them to the “Tag people or teams” section displayed in the list of tagged users. With this, you can now remove the owner of a comment from the thread, if needed, even if they were not manually tagged before.

Improved experience when editing comments

You can now use the following shortcut keys when editing comments:

  • CTRL + Z (CMD + Z for Mac) to undo a change

  • CTRL + Y (CMD + Y for Mac) to redo a change

Prior to these enhancements, you could not undo or redo changes while editing a comment. For more information, see Update work.

New look and feel of the “edited” tag after editing a comment

When editing a comment in the new commenting Beta experience, an “edited” tag is added to the comment. This tag now has a new look and feel from the one originally released. The date and time stamps of the comment are those of the original comment. They are not the date and time stamps of when the edit was made. For more information, see Update work.

Comments from children objects roll up to a parent object

When enabling the commenting Beta experience, the comments associated with a child object now roll up to the parent object. For example, comments from documents now display on the issue where the documents are attached. For information, see Update section overview.

You can now add hyperlinks to comments using the following shortcut keys:

  • CTRL + V (CMD + V for Mac) pastes a link over selected text
  • CTRL + K (CMD + K for Mac) opens the Add links box.

Prior to these enhancements, you could add hyperlinks only by clicking the link icon in the Rich Text toolbar. For more information, see Update work.

Images are removed from the Documents area when attachments are removed from comments or when comments containing an attachment are removed

We are changing the way attachments work when removing or editing a comment that contains an attachment. Now, when you edit a comment and remove the attachment, or when you delete a comment that contains an attachment, the attachment is also removed from your Documents area. Prior to this change, in the previous commenting experience, the attachments remained in your Documents area. For information, see Update work.
