Create a lookup dataset

A Dataset Lookup allows Adobe Journey Optimizer to retrieve reference or transactional data from an Adobe Experience Platform dataset at journey runtime, without requiring that data to be stored on the real-time customer profile.

In this use case, when a user submits an Investment Preference form (Stocks, Bonds, or CDs), the journey dynamically looks up the corresponding investment details from a reference dataset and uses that information to personalize an email.

Creating lookup dataset

Transcript

After creating the lookup dataset, the next step is to modify the journey to include a dataset lookup activity. To do this, create a new version of the journey. In the journey canvas, add the dataset lookup activity from the orchestration section. The dataset lookup activity allows you to dynamically retrieve data from Adobe Experience Platform record datasets at runtime. Associate the investment product dataset with the dataset lookup activity, then select the fields you want to retrieve from the dataset. In this case, all available fields from the dataset are selected for use later in the journey. In the lookup keys field, select a joining key that exists in both the decision item attributes and the lookup dataset. This key is used by the system to search and match records in the selected dataset. In this case, the asset class field is used as the joining key. The next step is to edit the email body content to include the data from the lookup dataset. Join the dataset lookup activity to the email activity. Select the email activity step and click on edit content. Once the content loads, open the email designer. To display fields from the lookup dataset, a one-column structure was added to the email body to serve as a container for the dynamic content. Within this structure, a grid component was inserted to control layout and alignment. Four text components were then placed inside the grid, each configured to render a specific field retrieve from the dataset lookup using the personalization editor. Insert the dataset lookup fields into the text component using the Adobe Journey Optimizer personalization editor. Delete the default text, open the personalization editor, click contextual attributes, and drill down into the dataset lookup’s node to select and insert the text fields. The rest of the dataset fields were added to the remaining text components. A descriptive text was added above the dataset fields grid. Make sure you save the email design.

Once the changes are saved, make sure you publish the new version of the journey. With the updated journey live, it is time to test the solution. Enter the details in the form and click submit to trigger the journey. Open the email received from AGO. Check the email for personalization and the dataset fields are included as per the investment preference of the form submitter.
