Unable to generate share link from Collections due to job queue backlog in AEM Assets

This article explains how to troubleshoot share-link generation from a Collection in AEM Assets as a Cloud Service when the error Unable to generate link, try again appears. The issue occurs when a backlog in the shared job-processing queue delays the share-link job. To fix this, review the job queues, isolate custom workflow jobs in dedicated queues, remove queue congestion through the approved cleanup process, and verify that the share link generates successfully.

Description description

Environment

  • Adobe Experience Manager Assets
  • Author environment
  • Collections and share-link generation

Issue/Symptoms

  • When a user attempts to generate a share link from a Collection, the interface displays Share 1 asset and stops responding.
  • After the request times out, the interface displays the error Unable to generate link, try again.
  • Retrying the operation produces the same error.
  • The issue affects all users and all Collections in the affected environment, regardless of Collection size.

Cause

The asynchronous job responsible for share-link generation is delayed by a backlog in the shared job-processing queue. Failing or repeatedly retrying custom workflow jobs consumes queue capacity and prevents share-link jobs from being processed on time.

Resolution resolution

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Review the AEM job queues for backlogs or long-running jobs, especially custom workflow jobs that fail or retry frequently.
  2. If custom jobs share the default processing queue with share-link jobs, assign dedicated queues to the custom job topics through the supported queue-configuration process.
  3. If stuck or long-running workflow instances are causing queue congestion, provide the affected workflow details and queue information to Adobe Support and request the approved cleanup process.
  4. After the queue configuration or cleanup is complete, attempt to generate a share link from the Collection again.
  5. Verify that the share link is generated successfully.
  6. If no custom workflows are present or you don’t know how to review or configure the job queues, consult your AEM administrator or implementation partner.

Note: Don’t delete workflow-context nodes directly from the JCR repository in AEM as a Cloud Service. Use the supported cleanup process for the affected workflow instances.
