Learn how to configure, author, and deliver SMS messages in Journey Optimizer campaigns and journeys.
In this video, I will show you how to configure, author, and deliver SMS messages. In Adobe Journey Optimizer, you can use the SMS channel both to create campaigns as well as add them to your journeys. I will show you both. So first, let’s go to the campaigns and create a campaign. So I will click on create campaign. I will not go too much into detail because it’s the same for every campaign, but you can choose to schedule the campaign or trigger it via API. Then you can choose the action. So which channel do you want to use? In this case, we will use SMS. And you’ll have to select the SMS surface, which needs to have been created by your administrator in order to enable you to use SMS as a channel. And then click on create. The user interface looks very similar for the channels. The difference is actually in the content editing. So in the properties section, I’m going to give this a name. It’s our SMS demo campaign. And I’m not going to add a description or tags for this demo purpose. Then on the audience, I would like to select an audience that has been created, which only has me in there because I actually don’t want to send the SMS to anybody else than me today. Okay. Now if we look at the actions section, this is where you can change the SMS surface if you need to. Where you can edit the content. We’ll get to that in a minute. Let me quickly go through the other things that you can do in campaigns. So we have content experimentation. Not going to go into this today. There is a separate video explaining how experimentation works. It’s basically allows you to do a B testing on your content. Important here is action tracking. So for SMS, you can track the clicks on the links in the SMS. And we want to do that today. And then of course the scheduling. I’m just going to leave it by default. I will activate it manually. I stop it manually. And I will only send it once. Okay. Let’s create the content. So I want to send an SMS. I would like to welcome the customer to this demo. I would like to personalize this message as well as add a clickable URL. I could add the URL here, but I do want to track it. So I need to go into this personalization dialogue. For those of you who are already familiar with Adobe Journey Optimizer, this is the personalization dialogue you have for any content that you would like to personalize. So it’s not specific to SMS. As you can see here, you can personalize with profile attributes, segment membership. You can add offer decisions, contextual attributes, et cetera, and the helper functions. I’m going to start very simple. I could put any attribute that the profile has and use that for personalization. For example, the birth date or the city or whatever information we have. I’m going to keep it simple. For our purpose, I’m just going to take the first name. Then I’m searching click on plus and we have the first name. So welcome to the SMS demo. Sandra, that’s hopefully what it will say. And then visit our website to learn more. And then we want to add the website and we want to track that. And in order to do that, I’m going to use a helper function. So if we click on helper functions and you need to remove the filter if you add anything in the search box and then under here under helpers, you will find URL. So make sure you have the cursor where you want to put the URL. I have it here. Click on plus and now you can see here you have the URL. You can add your URL. And I would like to have this link tracked. That’s all I need to do. And now I can click save. Okay. I will review to activate. So this is what my message will look like. I can edit it. Let’s check here. Everything’s fine. The audience is fine. Channel should be fine. Okay. Yes, let’s activate. This campaign will be activated soon. Let’s create a journey. You now know how to create a campaign. We will create a journey using SMS. Just going to call it SMS demo. Okay. And let’s make it very simple. We’re going to use the segment qualification. I’m going to add my segment again. There we go. Save it. Game space is email. You can change it here. I’m going to keep it with email. I’m not going to add a label. Okay. And then we are going to, if we go down here into the actions, you can see SMS is available as an action. So I’m going to drag and drop it. I’m going to give it a label. I’m going to leave the description as is. This is a marketing SMS. I can also decide to do a transactional one. So for example, in my journey, if I would like to send an order confirmation via SMS, I can do that. But in this case, we’re marketing. And I, of course, also have to choose the channel surface. And as you see here, I have two channel surfaces for marketing available. If I choose transactional, I have only the transactional marketing SMS surfaces available. But let me go back to marketing. Here we go. The SMS parameters, the field that the mobile phone number that we’ll be using to send the SMS to, I always add an alternative path in case of time out an error so that I can see if I’m testing it, if something doesn’t go through, especially if you have a more complex journey where the issue lies. So let me go into edit content. And it’s the same as before. So I’m going to just keep it very simple. I’ll put the first name in anyway. There we go. Save. And we are done. Now let me activate the test mode and see if this actually works. So I have my phone here. And let me trigger an event. And this is where the email address comes in. Profile identifier was set to email. So I’m going to put the email in. If it was set to something else, the ID or the mobile number, for example, you would have to put that in. So I’m going to trigger this journey. Let me pull up my phone. And we can see it’s going through. And there we go. Here’s my text message. That’s how easy it is to use SMS in your deliveries.
