Transcript
The introduction of frequency rules. Marketers can create and manage rules that will cap the number of messages sent to an individual based on channel and rule category.
In this video, we’ll learn how to create and activate new frequency rules. We’ll review how to determine which frequency rules will be inherited for a message. We’ll walk through different steps to take in testing frequency rules. And finally, we’ll look at reporting on frequency rules. Let’s take a look.
We’ll start by navigating to the Rules section of the Administration menu. From this Inventory view, I can see which frequency rules have already been created. And I can see which rules are inactive or active. I’ll click on Create rule to create a new rule. I can give my rule a name. I can give it a cap increment amount.
And I can choose my channel.
Once I click Save, I’m returned to the Inventory view where I can activate my rule if I so choose. You’ll notice, I already have an email rule active for four messages per month. Keep in mind that once activated, a rule can take up to a few minutes to take effect. Next, let’s take a look at how rules are inherited for messages. I have just started to create a new message and I’m at the Message Property screen. I see a dropdown menu to select the category. Remember that all of my frequency rules that have been created have been assigned to the Marketing category. I can also choose Transactional as my category to ensure that my messages are not capped. You will see that I have a link that informs me that frequency rules may be applied. Clicking on this link will take me to a filtered view of the rules that apply to that specific category and channel. Now, we are going to test our frequency rules. As profiles receive marketing messages, a counter on their profiles incremented to keep track of when the profiles should be capped. Keep this in mind when testing rules, as the profile you choose to test with may already have a frequency increment on their profile. In this scenario, I’m going to use a fresh profile for my testing. You’ll see that I have constructed a journey of five email messages and that I have an active frequency rule set to cap profiles at four emails. I will trigger this journey in test mode and enter my profile.
You’ll see that the journey test winds through the different messages until it gets to the end.
You’ll notice that in my inbox, I’ve received four messages but not the fifth message.
We can take a look at the log for the journey to see how the profile was incremented with the frequency rules.
Here you can see my profile that has been entered into the test and all the different increments that have happened on this profile as a result of frequency rule.
Finally, in reporting, we can see the number of deliveries that were executed for this profile and that some profiles were excluded from delivery.
If I scroll to the reason for the exclusion, I can see that my profile, my one profile was excluded based on frequency rules. In summary, you should now have an understanding of how to create, manage, and apply frequency rules to your messages. Be sure to read more on frequency rules in our Journey Optimizer Documentation.
