Create a chart report on a Canvas Dashboard
The first things you need to do before you can create a Canvas Dashboard report are:
- Enroll in the Canvas Dashboard beta, and
- Create a Canvas Dashboard
Introduction to Canvas Dashboards shows you step by step how to do both of these.
The first thing you need to do before you can create a Canvas dashboard report is to create a Canvas dashboard. If you need help doing that, click the link below to view the introduction to Canvas dashboards tutorial. Now open your Canvas dashboard and click on add report. Select create report under create new report. Then select chart report.
Then click on create report.
We’ll name this report tasks by project and progress status.
And in the description we’ll give a little more detail.
Show tasks on current projects grouped by project name and by progress status.
Starting with a name in the description will help us remember the important details when creating our report.
The description will show under this tooltip. Then we’ll click on show chart. We want to use a bar chart. There are a few other options, but we’ll use bar this time. And for bar type, we’ll choose stacked. For the bottom x axis, we want to use the task name.
So we’ll search for task. And within the task object, we’ll search for name. And for aggregation, we’ll choose count. The primary left axis will choose the project name.
So we’re already in the task object. We want to go up to the project object associated with this task.
And then from the project object, we’ll choose the project name. And then the secondary left y axis will choose the task progress status. For the filter, we’ll check our description.
You want to show tasks on current projects. So we’ll click edit filter.
Add condition.
Click on the empty field.
Click on pick field.
And now we want to go up a level from our tasks to the project object.
And from within the project object, we want to see status. And we want to see projects where the status equal to current. Next, we have the opportunity to select columns like in a table report. This and the grouping options that follow are viewed when you drill down on the chart series. We’ll show you that in a minute. We already have a column called project name.
Since we’re going to use this in a drill down situation, we’re already going to know the project name. So we’ll delete this column.
The name column, this is the task name. We want to make sure it’s easy for people to know that we’re talking about the task name. So we can come and change this column label to say task name.
Now we’ll choose another column for progress status. Another one for task status. And we’ll choose one more for planned completion date. For groupings within the drill down columns, we’ll group them by the primary task assignee. So we’ll add a grouping.
And we’ll look at the assigned to name.
Go to the assigned to object and type name. And this will be our groupings.
So now we’ll save our report. We can hover over a section in the bar to get a summary. And we can click on it to see the drill down columns. So here are the tasks with the progress status of late for this project, grouped by the primary assignee.
