Add conditional formatting to a Canvas Dashboard report
The first things you need to do before you can create a Canvas Dashboard report are:
- Enroll in the Canvas Dashboard beta, and
- Create a Canvas Dashboard
Introduction to Canvas Dashboards shows you step by step how to do both of these.
In this video we’re going to add conditional formatting to an existing Canvas Dashboard report.
To create a Canvas Dashboard report, you first need to create a Canvas Dashboard. If you need help doing that, click the link below to view the Introduction to Canvas Dashboard tutorial.
We’ve already created this one. Next you’ll need to create a Canvas Dashboard report. We’ll use a table report in this video.
If you want to learn how to create a table report, click the link below. We’ll open this creative team tasks report and add conditional formatting to change the background color of each line based on the progress status.
To do that we’ll choose edit from the three dot menu. From here we’ll click on the build table icon or columns.
Now we’ll select the progress status column and click on conditional formatting rules. Make sure progress status is the column highlighted. This is where your conditional formatting rules will apply.
Now click on add new rule.
And here we’ll see progress status again. When it’s equal to late, we have a few options. We can change the background color. We can change the text color. Or we can change any of these text styles or all of them at once.
And we can have this apply to the entire row. This row happens to be a late task. Okay, so we’re going to undo these. And what we want to do is just change the background color.
So click on background color. We’ve got a whole palette here for you to create whatever color you want.
Alternatively, you can type in a hex code if you know one. I’m no good at choosing colors from a palette, so I’ll share a shortcut with you if you want to just get some nice bright colors quickly.
The RGB hex code has two characters representing the intensity of red, two for green and two for blue.
00 is no intensity and FF is maximum intensity.
So if I just type FF0000, I’m going to get a clear red.
Now when you type this in, in order to save it, you have to click just outside this little box. If you click outside the whole box, then the whole thing goes away. So be sure and just click outside this little box. There you go. You’ve got straight red.
And we’ve got no transparency here. We can change the transparency to 50 percent. OK. Click there and here.
And now we’ll add another rule. This time we’ll select on time.
The task is on time. We want to have it be green as a background color. So for green.
It’ll be 00FF00. Click here.
And bring it down to 50 percent. Now we have a green that will add one more rule. And this time, if it’s behind, we’re going to have it change the color to yellow.
Now red and green make yellow. So we’ve got FF for maximum red, FF for maximum green, and 00 for blue. And we’ll take this down to 50 as well. Now for all this to be saved, we just need to click here.
One thing I didn’t do on the second two rules.
There’s an option to have this apply to only the cell. Or you can have it applied to the entire row. And I selected entire row for late. So let’s go back and edit these and make them all the entire row. We can kind of see what we like better. There you go. Click save now and see it in our full report.
