Configure Smart Imaging and DPR behavior in AEMaaCS with Dynamic Media

Smart Imaging features such as Browser Format Conversion (BFC), Network Bandwidth Optimization, and Device Pixel Ratio (DPR) optimization in Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service(AEMaaCS) with Dynamic Media can be confusing to configure and understand. This article explains how these features work, how they affect image delivery, and what to consider for correct setup when using Core Components.

Description description

Environment

  • Product: Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service – Assets (Dynamic Media)
  • Constraints: Use of Image V3 Core Component with Dynamic Media integration

Issue/Symptoms

  • Enabling Smart Imaging at the Dynamic Media account level does not automatically apply DPR optimization to images rendered by the Image V3 Core Component.
  • The parameter dpr=off is appended to Scene7 image URLs when multiple widths are not configured in the component policy or when smartCrop is not enabled.
  • Images appear lower quality or less sharp on high-DPI/Retina displays if not configured correctly.
  • Setting dpr=on or passing DPR values via image modifiers does not override this behavior due to component logic.

Resolution resolution

To fix this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Enable Smart Imaging at the Dynamic Media company or account level for your environment (Stage or Production).

  2. Open the template or page that uses the Image V3 Core Component with Dynamic Media enabled.

  3. Edit the policy for the Image V3 Core Component used on the template or page.

  4. Configure multiple widths for responsive images in the component policy.

  5. Save and apply the updated policy.

  6. Republish affected pages so the changes take effect.

  7. Test image rendering on both standard DPI and high-DPI (Retina) devices:

    • On standard DPI screens, dpr=off appears in image URLs by design to avoid large images.
    • On high-DPI screens, higher-resolution images are delivered when multiple widths are configured.
  8. Use the dedicated Dynamic Media component instead of Image V3 if you need better image quality without manual modifiers.

  9. Confirm that images are clear on high-DPI displays and load efficiently on standard displays.

Notes

  • The addition of dpr=off by default avoids unnecessarily large images on non-Retina screens. It is not a product defect but an optimization safeguard.
  • Forcing DPR using URL modifiers or presets does not override this safeguard in Image V3. Use multiple widths in policies instead.
  • No application-side URL changes are required after enabling account-level DPR optimization. Client-side logic can still be used for advanced scenarios if needed.
  • Smart Imaging format conversion (for example, WebP or AVIF) is enabled by default when Smart Imaging is active at the account level. It applies only when it reduces file size without affecting quality.
