.tif files fail to preview in AEM

Issue/Symptoms

  • Some .tif files uploaded to AEM fail to preview or render properly.
  • The issue is caused by unsupported compression methods.
  • Logs show the error unknown/unsupported compression.

Cause

AEM uses a version of the Commons Imaging library that doesn’t support certain TIFF compression methods, such as JPEG and Adobe Deflate.

Resolution resolution

To fix this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Check AEM logs for errors related to unsupported TIFF compression.

  2. Review metadata of the affected .tiffiles:

    • Files using JPEG or Adobe Deflate compression fail to preview.
    • Files using Uncompressed compression work correctly.
  3. Re-save the problematic files using a supported compression method like Uncompressed.

  4. Upload the updated files to AEM and confirm they preview correctly.
