Hey everybody, it’s Doug. In this video I want to talk about ad hoc segments or in other words, just, you know, creating segments on the fly when I am doing my analysis. So obviously we have our segments down here that we have created, and these are just a few of them. I can show all of them, but what about, you know, if I’m just going through here and I just wonder, what about Mondays only? I don’t need it always. I just want to, you know, find out right now. I can drag that over and drop that in here. And now I get all of the data just for Mondays. You can see that also creates what we call now a quick segment. However, it’s not something I can reuse right now. If I go back, it’s not down here in the segments it’s just kind of, you know, I’m in the middle of my analysis and I want to look at Mondays for a minute. And so that’s why we’re calling it ad hoc just so you can, like, you know, in the stream of consciousness here, you can move through your data and add segments very quickly. So as you saw, I can add dimension values by going into the values here and dragging them over. I could also add dimensions themselves. So if I wanted to say just visits for example or hits where there was a tracking code I can just drag that in as well. I could drag in a metric, so let me get rid of this one. Guess I could have left it there. And I’ll drag in orders. Now, that’s where an order exists, and you can see by the bubble here that it is a hit where an order exists. Maybe you want visits where there was an order. So because this is now a quick segment we can just click on the little edit button here and we can very quickly change that to visits. And when we apply that pages views go up substantially, etc. So now we have visits where there was an order and once again, if I didn’t have it in my segments it can be something that I just drag in and look at, you know, when I need it. Now that being said, what if it’s something that I want all the time? Then what I can do when I go into that builder, that little builder, is I can actually open the builder, the real builder. Are you sure? Yes.
I can click the button to now make this segment available to all my projects and add it to my component list. I can save it and then it’ll go down into the segments here and I can reuse it whenever I need to. Let me go ahead and cancel that for the moment. And that’s pretty much it. I just wanted to show you that you could drag in dimensions or dimension values or metrics and create these ad hoc segments. One more thing that’s really cool, let me go ahead and get rid of that for a second. Last thing here that I wanted to show you is you can actually drag them right from a table as well. So sure, they’re over here and you know, these marketing channels are in that area right here. But if you are going through here and you’re like you know what, what about social media marketing channel? Let me just throw that up here for everybody. You can drag it right out of a table. If I hold down command on a MAC or control on a PC and drag that up here and drop it in there then once again, that can become a quick segment where the marketing channel equals social media. Of course, that’s the only one that will still show here but it’ll change all of your data and you were able to just drag it right out of a table as well. Very cool. Anyway, I hope this helps as you go through your analysis that you can just become proficient in using these quick ad hoc segments. Good luck. -
