Learn about the basic operations of AEM Assets including how to create folders, as well as upload, copy, move and delete assets.

Folders are created in AM Assets by navigating to the existing folder where the new folder should created and tapping create and selecting folder. The folder title is the human friendly display name that’s exposed in the asset’s web UI to authors. And the name is the underlying system name of the folder. Names are typically lower case with dashes, and when possible, it’s best to avoid spaces or unusual characters in the name. Existing folders can be edited by selecting them and tapping properties. Basic things like folder title can be updated or their contents can be made orderable allowing users to manually specify the order of its contents. Other advanced properties, usually managed by Asset administrators, are managed here as well, and cascade down to sub-asset and sub-folders. These range from metadata settings and profiles to cloud service integrations and permissions on the assets and folders there.
To change a folder’s name, and remember, the folder name is different from the title, the folder must be selected and moved.
Similar to creating folders, new assets can be uploaded via the create button and selecting file.
One or more assets can be selected via the file system and uploaded into the current folder.
Alternatively, drag and drop is also supported. Simply drag one or more assets from the file system into an open asset folder to upload.
Using the same mechanism, existing assets can be replaced by reuploading them. If an asset being uploaded to folder already exists in that folder with the same file name, AM recognizes this conflict and provides several options to resolve, from creating a new uniquely named asset, to replacing the existing asset, wiping out prior working history, or creating a new version of the asset, preserving prior work and history. Asset provides a number of operations for working with folders and assets that are available via the top action bar. We’ll take a look at a few of the more basic ones. To invoke the action bar, simply select one or more assets or folders, and it will display all actions available to the user.
And the first basic operation we’ll look at is copy. Upon invoking copy, the asset is added to the user’s clipboard and a paste button appears, which can be used to paste the asset into any other folder.
Next is move, which is also used to rename assets. A new asset title and name can be specified.
Next, select the folder to move the asset to.
Last is the leap, which simply removes the files or folders from AM.
The edit action is also available for image assets but should be used with care.
This provides a web-based image editor that provides some basic functionality such as crop, rotate and flip.
It’s important to realize that changes made with this tool result in updates to the original file, and in turn, affect all asset renditions. While these changes can be rolled back using AM’s versioning, the changes are destructive, and the tools should be used judiciously. Clicking into an asset opens it in the asset details view, which provides a more complete view into the asset. In the center is a large preview of the asset. Along the top is an action bar with similar options as seen previously when selecting assets in the files view. And along the left side is a sidebar that exposes several views for quick access to various aspects of the asset, including a high-level metadata view and usage insights that are populated if asset insights has been configured.
Timeline provides a view into the asset’s history, including comments, versions, or flow and activities.
And renditions provides a list of all the available renditions for the asset.
Asset details also provides a convenient navigation mechanic for cycling through all assets in a folder without leaving the asset details view.
When finished with this view, simply click close to return to return to the files view. -
