Blocked Tags
Learn how to enhance asset management in AEM as a Cloud Service by using Blocked Tags to prevent the application of culturally sensitive, irrelevant, or controversial Smart Tags.

Hi, and welcome to this video focusing on Smart Tags and the strategic use of Block Tags in Adobe Experience Manager assets. Let’s get started. Smart tags are an innovative feature in AM assets, utilizing artificial intelligence or AI to automatically tag assets based on the contents of the asset, for better organization and discoverability. However, this automated process can sometimes include tags that are culturally offensive, controversial, inaccurate, or simply irrelevant to your specific business needs. This is where the functionality of block tags becomes essential. Imagine you’re managing a diverse collection of digital assets. Automatic smart tagging might inadvertently attach sensitive or inappropriate terms, or maybe tags that are just not applicable to your content strategy. Moderating these tags manually is not only tedious, but also prone to human error. Let’s see how AM handles this. In AM assets, we’ll search for surfing man. AM assets returns a number of assets that match the search criteria, and most of them are correct. However, here we have an image of a surfer whose gender is somewhat indiscernible. However, I happen to know the surfer is a woman and not a man. It’s not unreasonable for the smart tag AI to believe this to be a man, which we can see by the smart tagging of the image with the man tag. But in this case, it’s simply inaccurate. And you know what? I think it’s better going forward to leave the application of gender metadata to the weekend content team, who can apply this metadata more accurately. As an admin, I’ll head over to Settings, Block Tags. This area allows you to view and manage tags that you don’t want automatically smart tagged. Let’s block smart tag values related to gender, such as man and woman, to prevent misclassification. We simply add a block tag, enter the values to block, and it’s as simple as that. After adding these terms to the block list and saving, they will no longer be applied as smart tags to new or reprocessed assets in AM. To demonstrate, let’s re-upload the asset erroneously tagged with man. Once the asset has finished processing and had smart tags applied, you’ll notice the man smart tag is now absent, aligning more accurately with our tagging strategy. We, as content authors, can always add the gender to the asset manually, if we feel it’s necessary. For bulk updates of block tags, AM makes it easy. Go back to Settings, Block Tags, and export your current list as a CSV file. In your spreadsheet editor, you can open up the downloaded CSV and add any other terms to block. Let’s go ahead and add a few more to our list. When we’re finished, we can simply save these changes back to a CSV, and then import this updated list back into AM assets. Upon importing the updated list, all the new terms will be blocked from smart tag application. You can always edit this list by selecting specific block tags, and removing them in order to adapt to changing content strategies or cultural sensitivities. Remember, while these settings are done in this AM assets user interface, they apply universally in AM, even to assets uploaded via the Assets Files interface. To illustrate, I’ll switch back to the other interface, and I’ll delete the re-uploaded example image, and upload it once again. We can wait for the asset to finish processing, which includes its smart tagging, open up its properties, and just like before, the blocked smart tags are not applied to the smart tag property of this asset. Alright, thanks for joining. Now you’re equipped to use AM’s block tags feature to ensure your asset tagging is culturally sensitive, relevant, and aligns with your brand’s values and content strategy.
