Explore how to create and use a For Placement Only (FPO) rendition for AEM assets.

Hi there, in this video, let’s take a quick look at how to generate and use For Placement Only renditions for AEM Assets with Adobe Asset Link panel for a creative user. When large asset files are placed onto InDesign documents from AEM Assets using Adobe Asset link, creative users need to wait for a few seconds after initiating the place operation. This impacts the overall user experience. With Adobe Asset Link, we can now temporarily place a low-resolution image of the original asset from AEM Assets, thereby reducing the time taken to place an image. At the same time, it increases the overall user experience and productivity. The low-resolution image is placed temporarily. And when the final output is required for printing or publishing, the original full-resolution asset replaces the lower resolution image, and it all happens in the background. This new lowerer solution is also called as For Placement Only rendition. If an FPO rendition is not available for an asset, Adobe InDesign uses the original asset instead. This fallback mechanism ensures that the creative workflow proceeds without any breaks. Experience Manager as a Cloud Service offers cloud-native asset processing capabilities to generate the FPO renditions. FPO renditions are created using asset’s microservices, and can be configured for newly uploaded assets and of the assets that already exist in AEM. For this capability to work, the current Asset Update workflow in AEM Assets needs to be modified with an additional step to create a For Placement Only rendition. From your AEM homepage, navigate to Workflow models, and open the DAM Update Asset workflow. Click Edit workflow option, and find the Process Thumbnail step. Let’s configure the Process Thumbnail step to enable the FPO rendition creation. And you can also adjust the quality of the FPO renditions that you want to create. Make sure to save and sync your changes.
Now, let’s navigate to the AEM Assets window, and then run a DAM Update Asset workflow.
Wait for the asset reprocessing to be complete. For existing assets, you can rerun the DAM Update Asset workflow for generating FPO rendition.
For all new asset uploads, the Asset Upload workflow automatically generates the FPO rendition. Once a workflow is complete, let’s open the asset file and under renditions, you can now view a For Placement Only rendition with a lower resolution created. Switch to Adobe InDesign from the Adobe Asset Link panel, select the image for which we created an FPO rendition, and choose the Place Linked option. Adobe Asset Link adds the For Placement Only rendition of the original asset to the InDesign layout.
Click on the Windows option and select the Links panel. Under the list of Linked Assets, you can view the file linking status listed as For Placement Only, and notice the lower resolution details for the linked asset. You can download the original asset and replace the FPO rendition with the origin of rendition of the asset. Adobe enables temperately placing small-sized renditions for AEM Asset files within InDesign documents to speed up the design process and improves the overall productivity. Adobe Asset Link streamlines collaboration between creative professionals and marketers in the content creation process. -
