Introduction to the Editors id181OD0QE05Z

Experience Manager Guides comes with an easy-to-use editor for creating and editing structured documents. The editor hides all the complexities of the DITA structure from the writer. The editor provides a list of DITA elements that a user would usually need to work within a document.

New Editor

NOTE
New Editor is available in Experience Manager Guides as a Cloud Service starting with 2026.05.0 release. Contact your Customer Success team to enable this feature.

New Editor provides a significant evolution of the authoring experience, with focused improvements in performance, usability, and UI/UX. Designed specifically for DITA maps and DITA topics, it enables efficient authoring of large, complex, and highly structured content while remaining fully backward compatible and having no impact on non‑DITA content.

Key features

  • Performance improvements for large files: Enhances responsiveness for large DITA files with support for undo/redo and dirty markers, ensuring reliable change tracking without performance degradation.
  • Modernized table authoring: Delivers a more intuitive table editing experience with drag‑and‑drop reordering, contextual toolbars, and bulk row or column insertion for faster and more accurate table management.
  • Enhanced Author mode: Provides configurable visibility of XML comments and attributes directly in Author mode, reducing the need to switch to Source view while working with structured content.
  • Advanced editing modes and tools: Introduces side‑by‑side Author and Source mode for topics and a quick insert menu, enabling faster structured authoring with minimal context switching.
  • UI and UX Refinements: Improves readability and visual comfort through a dark theme and richer default CSS in Author and Preview modes, delivering a more modern editing interface.
  • Centralized Editor settings: Offers a unified settings panel to personalize the authoring experience, including control over tags, attributes, XML comments, non‑breaking spaces, and quick insert menu in editor.

Limitations of New Editor

New Editor currently does not support the following features. These capabilities are planned to be introduced in upcoming releases.

  • Authoring with Track Changes enabled (any existing tracked changes are preserved and treated as regular content)
  • New citations (any existing citations in the content are preserved)
  • Image resizer in Author view
  • Using data from data sources (for example JIRA, SQL Databases, PIM, or PLM)
NOTE
The Layout view for DITA maps will not be supported with New Editor.

Old Editor

The Old Editor in Experience Manager Guides offers a straightforward and reliable authoring experience for structured content, abstracting the complexities of DITA while ensuring compliance with supported standards such as DITA 1.2, 1.3, lightweight DITA, and specialized DITA. It provides essential tools for working with common block and inline elements, making it well-suited for consistent and controlled content creation within a structured framework.
