AEM: Resolving 504 Gateway Time-out errors with dispatcher flush agents behind Azure Front Door

If you see intermittent 504 Gateway Time-out errors when running dispatcher flush agents in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) deployed behind Azure Front Door, update your network security group (NSG) rules to allow the required Azure Front Door IP ranges.

Description description

Environment

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), all versions

Issue/Symptoms

  • Intermittent 504 Gateway Time-out errors occur when running dispatcher flush agents
  • The error does not occur on every request
  • No recent changes to dispatcher or AEM configuration

Cause

The 504 Gateway Time-out errors are caused by missing Azure Front Door IP ranges in the NSG allowlist. This gap blocks legitimate traffic and causes requests to time out.

Resolution resolution

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Obtain the current list of Azure Front Door IP ranges from the official Microsoft documentation (see Related reading).
  2. Update the NSG rules associated with the AEM author instance to allow inbound traffic from all required Azure Front Door IP ranges.
  3. Include all relevant regions in the allowlist.
  4. Save and apply the updated NSG rules.
  5. Test dispatcher flush agent operations to confirm that 504 Gateway Time-out errors no longer occur.
