Temporary Author outages during database primary-node transitions in AEM as a Cloud Service

This article explains how to recognize and respond to temporary outages in a production Author environment in AEM as a Cloud Service when the underlying MongoDB database cluster transitions to a new primary node. To fix this, monitor platform alerts, wait for automatic recovery, verify access and authoring operations, confirm that content changes are present, and contact Adobe Support if the outage persists.

Description description

Environment

  • Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service
  • Production Author environment

Issue/Symptoms

  • The Authoring interface is temporarily inaccessible.
  • Users cannot open pages or make content changes.
  • The outage is short-lived and resolves automatically.
  • No data loss is observed during the event.

Cause

A temporary outage occurs when the underlying MongoDB database cluster transitions to a new primary node. Authoring services remain briefly unavailable until the platform restores normal operation.

Resolution resolution

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Monitor the AEM as a Cloud Service environment using the platform’s automated service-monitoring and alerting features to detect authoring outages.

  2. If an outage occurs, check the available platform alerts or notifications for a temporary disruption in the Author environment.

  3. Wait a few minutes for the service to recover.

Note: Recovery occurs automatically after the underlying MongoDB database cluster stabilizes. The platform automatically restarts affected Author instances and restores connectivity.

  4. After the platform reports that the environment is healthy, verify that you can access the Authoring interface and perform content changes.

  5. Confirm that recent content changes are present and that no content is missing. If all content is present and authoring operations work normally, no further action is required.

  6. If the outage persists beyond a few minutes, data loss occurs, or authoring access continues to fail, provide the relevant details and contact Adobe Support.
