Smart Cropping not working due to image component policy customization

This article describes how to resolve issues where Smart Cropping does not work in Adobe Experience Manager Dynamic Media due to customizations in image component policies.

Environment

  • Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Dynamic Media

Issue/Symptoms

  • Smart Cropping doesn’t work as expected in the environment.
  • On a sample page, resizing the browser window doesn’t cause the hero image to follow Smart Cropping settings.
  • Dynamic Media is enabled, but Smart Crop functionality is unavailable.
  • The image remains static and doesn’t adapt to the configured crop settings.
  • No explicit error messages are displayed in the UI.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Navigate to a test page configured for Smart Cropping.
  2. Reduce the width of the browser window to trigger Smart Cropping.
  3. Observe that the hero image doesn’t adjust according to Smart Crop settings.

Cause

Customizations to the image component policy prevented Dynamic Media Smart Cropping features from functioning as expected.

Resolution resolution

To fix the Smart Cropping issue, follow these steps:

  1. Review the image component policy configuration in your AEM environment.
  2. Check for any customizations applied at the policy level that may override or disable Dynamic Media features.
  3. Ensure that all required Dynamic Media features, including Smart Cropping, are enabled within the image component configuration.
  4. Save and apply the updated policy.
  5. Clear the browser cache and reload the test page.
  6. Resize the browser window and verify that the hero image now responds to Smart Cropping settings.
