External recipients prompted to log in for AEM Share Links

This article describes how to troubleshoot and resolve situations where external recipients are prompted to log in when accessing or downloading assets via Share Links in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM).

Description description

Environment

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Assets (all supported versions)

Issue/Symptoms

  • External recipients of Share Links are unable to access or download assets without logging in.
  • The Share Link is valid and assets are accessible when logged in, but not for unauthenticated users.
  • When accessing the Share Link in a private browsing session or as an external user, an authentication required error is displayed.

Cause

Custom servlet mappings or authentication logic may be enforcing authentication on Share Link endpoints, preventing unauthenticated access as intended for external users.

Resolution resolution

To fix the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Review your AEM instance for any custom servlet mappings or custom authentication logic that could affect Share Link access paths.
  2. Consult with your development team to identify any custom implementations that might enforce authentication on Share Link endpoints.
  3. Temporarily disable or adjust the custom servlet or authentication logic to test if external access is restored for Share Links.
  4. If disabling the custom logic resolves the issue, refactor the implementation to ensure Share Link endpoints remain accessible to unauthenticated users as intended.
  5. After making changes, test Share Link access in a private browsing session to verify that external users can access and download assets without being prompted to log in.
