Fastly VCL snippet upload fails with “Read timed out after 10 seconds” error

When uploading or updating a Fastly VCL snippet from the Adobe Commerce Admin, the request fails with a read timeout after about 10 seconds. To fix the issue, open a support ticket with Adobe to raise the Fastly WAF-side timeout, or upload the snippet through the Fastly API as an interim workaround.

Description description

Environment

  • Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure
  • Fastly service / Fastly module VCL snippet management

Issue/Symptoms

Uploading or updating a Fastly VCL snippet from the Adobe Commerce Admin fails with an error similar to: Read timed out after 10 seconds

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open the Adobe Commerce Admin.
  2. Go to the Fastly configuration or VCL snippets area.
  3. Upload or update a VCL snippet.
  4. Save the snippet.

Result: The request fails after approximately 10 seconds with a read timeout.

Cause

The Admin path timeout is configurable up to 600 seconds, but this particular failure is not caused by that setting. It is caused by Fastly’s WAF-side timeout, which is separate from the Admin path timeout and cannot be changed from within the Adobe Commerce Admin. Only Adobe can raise this timeout on the Fastly side.

Resolution resolution

  1. If you encounter this error, note that it points to the Fastly WAF-side timeout rather than the Admin path timeout setting.
  2. Open a support ticket with Adobe, since only Adobe can raise the Fastly WAF-side timeout.
  3. As an interim workaround, upload or update the VCL snippet using the Fastly API instead of the Admin UI. The API path is not subject to the same 10-second limit.
