Bulk metadata update and CSV export for search-selected assets
This article describes how to update metadata in bulk and export metadata for assets selected from search results in Adobe Experience Manager Assets, including available methods and limitations.

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) as a Cloud Service - Assets
Issue/Symptoms
- Bulk metadata updates are needed for multiple assets selected from search results, not just at the folder level.
- There is no option to export metadata as CSV for assets in a static or smart collection.
- The standard UI allows bulk editing of some metadata fields for up to 100 selected assets, but does not provide a CSV export option for arbitrary search results or collections.
- No error messages are shown; the limitation is in available UI options.
Cause
The AEM Assets UI supports bulk metadata editing for up to 100 assets selected from search results, but CSV export is only available at the folder level. Collections do not provide a metadata export option. For more advanced scenarios, CSV import/export and external filtering are required.
Resolution resolution
To update metadata for assets selected from search results, follow these steps:
- In Assets View, search for the required assets.
- Select up to 100 assets from the search results.
- Click Bulk Metadata Edit.
- Update the desired standard metadata fields (such as Status, Expiration date, Author, Keywords, or Tags).
- Save the changes. Only the currently selected assets will be updated.
For custom metadata fields, assigning different values to different assets, or processing more than 100 assets:
- Prepare a CSV file with an asset path column (one row per asset) and the metadata properties to update.
- Go to Assets
>Create>Metadata to start the import workflow. This method allows updates to assets regardless of their folder location.
To export metadata for a specific set of assets:
- Export metadata from the smallest common parent folder.
- Filter the resulting CSV externally by the
assetPathvalues for the desired assets.
To download asset files (not metadata):
- Use a static collection to package and download selected asset files. This produces an asset download package, not a metadata CSV.
