AEM Content Hub: Add Assets button visible to viewers without upload permissions

In Adobe Experience Manager Content Hub, users with the Viewer role may see the Add Assets button even if they do not have upload permissions. This article explains the reason for this behavior and provides guidance on managing user expectations.

Description description

Environment

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Content Hub

Issue/Symptoms

Users assigned the Viewer role in Content Hub can see the Add Assets button, even though they do not have upload or write permissions in the AEM repository. When these users attempt to upload assets using this button, the upload fails and an error message appears: We can’t upload your files or folders. Please try again or refresh your screen.

Cause

The visibility of the Add Assets button is based on Content Hub entitlement, not on the user’s actual upload permissions in AEM. Users must be members of both the Content Hub product profile and the AEM Users product profile for the corresponding Author environment to successfully upload assets. If users lack the necessary AEM permissions, the upload will fail, but the button remains visible.

Resolution resolution

To fix the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Inform affected users that the presence of the Add Assets button does not guarantee upload capability. Users require both Content Hub access and appropriate AEM Author permissions to upload assets.
  2. Review user group memberships for users who need upload capability:
    • Ensure users are members of both the Content Hub product profile and the AEM Users product profile for the relevant Author environment.
  3. If users without upload permissions attempt to upload assets, an error message appears and the upload fails.
  4. There is currently no supported configuration or rule to hide or disable the Add Assets button for users lacking upload permissions.
  5. If this behavior impacts your organization, you may contact Adobe Support to request a feature enhancement, such as hiding or disabling the button for users without upload permissions, or displaying a clearer alert when upload is not permitted.
  6. To verify, log in as a user without upload permissions, attempt to upload an asset via the Add Assets button in Content Hub, and confirm that the error message appears and the upload does not complete.
