AEM editor users unable to update video asset thumbnails due to missing permissions

This article describes how to resolve an issue in Adobe Experience Manager where editor users are unable to update video asset thumbnails because of missing permissions.

Description description

Environment

  • Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) as a Cloud Service (all versions)

Issue/Symptoms

  • Editor users are unable to update the thumbnail of a video asset.
  • The operation works for users with administrative privileges but fails for users with editor permissions.
  • The following error appears in the UI: Failed to update thumbnail.
  • Editor users have different permissions than administrators.
  • Renaming the thumbnail image and reprocessing the assets doesn’t resolve the issue for editor users.

Cause

Editor users lacked the necessary read permissions to /conf/global/settings/cloudconfigs/dmscene7, which is required for updating video asset thumbnails in AEM.

Resolution resolution

To fix the issue where editor users can’t update the video asset thumbnails, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to AEM as an administrator.
  2. Navigate to the User Administration or Permissions console.
  3. Locate the group(s) or user(s) with editor permissions who require the ability to update video asset thumbnails.
  4. Grant at least Read permission to the following path: /conf/global/settings/cloudconfigs/dmscene7.
  5. Save the changes and ensure the permissions are applied to all relevant groups.
  6. Have an editor user log out and log back in, then attempt to update the video asset thumbnail again.
  7. Confirm that the operation now succeeds without error.
