Resolving “unable to send to external storage” error in Adobe Experience Manager Native Connector integrations

This article explains how to resolve the unable to send to external storage error that can occur when transferring files from Workfront to Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) using the AEM Native Connector, due to unsupported characters in project or folder names.

Description description

Environment

  • Adobe Experience Manager (AEM)
  • Workfront
  • AEM Native Connector integration

Symptoms

When transferring files from Workfront to AEM using the AEM Native Connector, an error message appears: unable to send to external storage.

Cause

This issue typically occurs when project names, folder names, or other naming fields involved in the transfer contain unsupported characters, such as the plus sign (+). These characters aren’t permitted in AEM asset or folder names and can cause the transfer to fail.

Resolution resolution

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Review all project names, folder names, and other naming fields involved in the AEM linked-folder creation or Send to AEM operations in Workfront.

  2. Remove or replace any unsupported characters, especially the plus sign (+), from these names:

    • Asset file names can’t contain: * / : [ \ ] | # % { } ? &

    • Asset folder names can’t contain: * / : [ \ ] | # % { } ? " . ; + & and tab

  3. After renaming, retry the file transfer operation through the AEM Native Connector.

  4. If the issue persists, clear the cache in Workfront and verify that all required tags for the workflow are present and correct.

  5. For further details on naming restrictions, refer to Manage assets: Create folders in the official AEM documentation.

  6. Verify that the file transfer completes successfully without the error.
