AEM Assets View: Duplicate assets created when setting background image and logo in Search First configuration

This article explains why duplicate assets appear in Adobe Experience Manager Assets View when configuring the Search First landing page with a background image and logo.

Description description

Environment

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Assets View (all versions)

Issue/Symptoms

When configuring the Search First landing page in Assets View and selecting a background image or logo from the asset repository, the system creates a duplicate of the selected asset in a dedicated settings location. This results in additional asset copies in the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system, which causes confusion for users who expect the original asset to be referenced directly.

  • After selecting an image or logo, an asynchronous copy job is triggered.
  • The duplicate asset appears under /content/dam/appdata (for background images) or /content/dam/appdata/searchFirstSettings/logo/ (for logos).
  • No error messages are displayed, but users notice unexpected asset copies in the DAM.

Cause

This is expected product behavior. The system copies the selected asset to a dedicated settings location to ensure consistent branding and prevent accidental modification or deletion of the original asset.

Resolution resolution

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue:

  1. Review the behavior: Understand that when a background image or logo is selected for the Search First homepage in Assets View, AEM intentionally copies the asset to a dedicated configuration path rather than referencing the original asset directly.

  2. Locate the copied assets:

    • Background images are copied to: /content/dam/appdata
    • Logos are copied to: /content/dam/appdata/searchFirstSettings/logo/
  3. To reduce confusion or limit visibility of these duplicates:

    • Configure Access Control Lists (ACLs) on the /content/dam/appdata and /content/dam/appdata/searchFirstSettings/logo/ paths so that only appropriate admin users can view or manage these assets.
    • Reference Adobe documentation for further details: Configure background image and logo for Search First
