Legacy classic UI wcmcommand URLs do not open referenced pages

Legacy Classic UI URLs such as wcmcommand?cmd=open do not open referenced pages in AEM as a Cloud Service. To fix this issue, use supported Touch UI Sites console or Page Editor URLs and update any tools or bookmarks that rely on legacy Classic UI URL patterns.

Description description

Environment

Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) as a Cloud Service

Issue/Symptoms

  • When attempting to open referenced pages from the DAM or content references using URLs like:

    code language-none
    /aem/bin/wcmcommand?cmd=open&path=/content/...

  • These URLs worked in AEM 6.5 Classic UI but do not function in AEM as a Cloud Service.
  • The referenced page exists and can be accessed directly, but the legacy URL does not open it in the authoring interface.
  • No explicit error message is shown; the page simply does not open as expected.

Cause

Legacy Classic UI endpoints such as wcmcommand?cmd=open are deprecated and unsupported in AEM as a Cloud Service, which uses Touch UI as the standard authoring interface.

Resolution resolution

Note: AEM as a Cloud Service uses the modern Touch UI (Sites and Page Editor) as the primary authoring interface. Legacy Classic UI endpoints such as wcmcommand?cmd=open are not supported in Cloud Service environments.

To fix the issue:

  1. Access Referenced Pages Using Touch UI URLs. To open a page, use the Touch UI Sites console:

    • Navigate to:/ui#/aem/sites.html/content/...
    • Select and open the desired page from the console.
    • Alternatively, use the direct Page Editor URL format:
      • For example:/ui#/editor.html/content/...
  2. If any custom tools, integrations, or bookmarks generate or rely on Classic UI URLs, update them to use the Touch UI URL patterns.
