Unable to add AEM Assets Author API via Server-to-Server authentication due to missing permissions

Adding the AEM Assets Author API in Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service (AEMaaCS) through Adobe Developer Console using Server-to-Server authentication fails because the required API option remains unavailable.  To resolve the issue, enable AEM Assets API users for the target environment.

Issue/Symptoms

  • The attempt to add the AEM Assets Author API via Server-to-Server authentication fails.
  • The API option does not appear in the Adobe Developer Console project configuration.
  • The interface displays an insufficient access or permission restriction message.
  • The integration setup cannot proceed due to the missing API availability.
  • No specific error code appears, but the UI indicates an access limitation.

Root cause

The issue occurs when the AEM Assets API users permission is not enabled for the relevant environment in the Adobe Admin Console, preventing Server-to-Server authentication setup for the AEM Assets Author API.

Resolution resolution

Follow these steps to enable access and add the API:

  1. Sign in to Adobe Admin Console and navigate to Products > AEM as a Cloud Service.
  2. Select the relevant environment corresponding to the intended integration.
  3. Expand the AEM Assets Collaborator Users section for the selected environment.
  4. Locate the AEM Assets API users service and turn on the toggle to enable API access for that environment.
  5. Verify that the toggle switches to an enabled (active) state for AEM Assets API users.
  6. Save the changes to apply the updated configuration.
  7. Return to Adobe Developer Console and reopen the project configuration.
  8. Add the AEM Assets Author API via Server-to-Server authentication and confirm that the option now appears and works successfully.
