SmartCrop download fails with maxUploadSizeInBytes error in AEMaaCS

SmartCrop or custom rendition downloads fail after copying assets within Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service (AEMaaCS). The download process returns errors, and the renditions don’t load correctly. To resolve the issue, reprocess the assets using the Dynamic Media workflow.

Description description

Environment

Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service (AEMaaCS) - Assets with Dynamic Media enabled

Issue/Symptoms

  • Smart Crops or custom overview downloads fail for assets that were copied within AEM.
  • The following error displays during the download: “.zip has failed: maxUploadSizeInBytes must be > 0.”
  • The AEM UI shows the error: “Unexpected Error: Looks like we are having some issues with our service.”
  • The issue occurs when accessing assets in a new location where the Smart Crops are missing or not generated on the Dynamic Media (DMS7) side.

Root cause

When you copy assets within AEM, the system updates the asset path and metadata, but does not update the associated Dynamic Media (DMS7) references. As a result, the Smart Crops remain unavailable for the copied assets until the asset is reprocessed in Dynamic Media.

Resolution resolution

Follow these steps to reprocess the affected assets and restore Smart Crop availability:

  1. Identify the affected assets that were copied within AEM and fail to download Smart Crops or custom renditions. Focus on assets that return errors during the download process.
  2. Navigate to the new asset location in the AEM Assets interface and open the path where the copied assets reside.
  3. Select the affected asset, open Workflow from the toolbar or context menu, and choose Start Workflow to initiate processing.
  4. Select Dynamic Media Reupload as the workflow and start it to reprocess the asset in Dynamic Media (DMS7) and regenerate the Smart Crops.
  5. Wait for the workflow to complete, ensuring the asset has finished reprocessing and that all Smart Crops are generated successfully.
  6. Verify Smart Crop availability by attempting to download the Smart Crops or custom renditions again and confirm that the download completes without errors.
