Adobe Experience Manager: Interrupting DataStore GC During Cleanup of Numerous Blobs

Description description

Data Store Garbage Collection (DataStore GC) is an essential maintenance task to prevent unbounded growth of storage consumption.

In AEM 6.5, DataStore GC may continue running beyond the configured maintenance window. This is particularly likely when performing the maintenance task on an S3DataStore that contains a large number of blobs.

This article explains how to stop the long-running DataStore GC process.

Resolution resolution

If DataStore GC runs for too long, shut down the AEM instance that is running it. Then restart AEM and run the DataStore GC steps again.

Note the following points:

  • Take a backup of your datastore, such as the S3 bucket, before running the garbage collection.
  • When using a shared datastore, such as SharedS3DataStore, a specific sequence is required each time. Perform the mark phase with markOnly set to true on all AEM instances, and then perform the garbage collection with the sweep phase on one of them.
  • Revision cleanup increases the effectiveness of DataStore GC.
