Custom package thumbnails don’t display for converted packages in AEMaaCS

Custom thumbnails defined for content packages don’t appear in Package Manager after deployment to Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service (AEMaaCS) through Cloud Manager. The deployment process converts packages and removes specific package metadata, including custom thumbnails, which prevents thumbnails from displaying after deployment. To address the issue, understand the behavior of the Cloud Manager deployment.

Environment

  • Product: Adobe Experience Manager as a Cloud Service (AEMaaCS) – Sites
  • Scenario: Package deployment through Cloud Manager

Issue/Symptoms

  • The Package Manager doesn’t display custom-defined thumbnails after deploying project packages to the cloud.
  • The same packages display custom thumbnails correctly in a local environment without conversion.
  • The issue appears only after cloud deployment and affects converted packages shown in Package Manager.

Resolution resolution

Follow the steps below to understand the issue:

  1. Understand that when packages are deployed through Cloud Manager in AEMaaCS, they’re automatically converted to Sling Feature Model artifacts with the cp2fm-converted.zip suffix.
  2. Recognize that during this conversion, certain package metadata—such as filters and custom thumbnails—is intentionally removed.
  3. Note that this behavior is by design and ensures compliance with cloud deployment requirements.
  4. If a thumbnail is visible for a converted package, verify whether the package was also installed manually (for example, through the RDE CLI or by an administrator), as manual installations retain original metadata and display thumbnails.
  5. No action’s required. Custom thumbnails for packages converted and deployed through Cloud Manager aren’t supported.
  6. Verify this behavior in Package Manager after deployment. Converted packages don’t display custom thumbnails unless they were also installed outside Cloud Manager.

Note: There’s currently no supported method to preserve or display custom package thumbnails for cp2fm-converted packages deployed through Cloud Manager in AEM as a Cloud Service. This limitation doesn’t affect package functionality or code deployment.
