Execute a campaign

Learn how to execute a campaign, review an email delivery and the delivery properties.

Transcript
In this video, we will be looking at how to execute a campaign. By the end of this video, you will know how to start a workflow, monitor progress, and analyze and confirm delivery. You will also learn how to review the delivery results and take a look at the available delivery properties. Let’s get started. To follow along, we first need to create a campaign. To create a campaign, select the Campaigns tab, followed by selecting Campaigns from the browser panel, then select the green Create button in the top right. The New Marketing Campaign window appears. From this window, provide a label for the new campaign. Next, select which program the campaign resides in by selecting the folder in the program prompt. Programs are just collections of campaigns. We can create any folder we want, but for this demo we will be using the default Campaigns folder. We also have the ability to schedule the start and end dates of the campaign. We will look into scheduling later in this video. Select OK to create the campaign. For this demo, we will be executing a simple email delivery workflow. From our campaign dashboard, select the Targeting and Workflows tab. Next, within Deliveries, drag the Email Delivery component into your workflow. Next, double-click Email Delivery, then select Continue. For the subject, let’s enter some dummy text and assign a single recipient. This process is all explained in detail in a subsequent video, but for now, let’s just assign ourselves. If we select the Scheduling tab at the top, we can see that by default deliveries have no schedule and will execute as soon as confirmation of the delivery has been given. If we want to postpone the deliveries to a later date after the confirmation, select the third radio button. This allows us to select a contact date for when we would like the emails to be sent. This means when all approvals are provided and the confirmation of the delivery is given, no emails will be sent until the specified contact date. The second radio button lets us schedule a provisional analysis of the delivery. For now, let’s not set a schedule. Additional scheduling options can be applied in the workflow, and we will cover some of these in another video. Next, let’s have a look at the delivery properties you have available for the delivery. Select the Properties button to open the Delivery Properties popover. The General tab is a basic tab where we can set a label for the delivery, which is just a user-friendly name given to all your deliveries. You also have an internal name. This is useful if we want to perform some scripting and would like a reference to this particular delivery. A delivery code can also be assigned to a delivery. The name of the delivery and its code appear in the list of deliveries but cannot be seen by the recipient. The delivery nature is useful for delivery tracking, as we can filter based on the criteria in our delivery list. We can also add a description in the delivery if we would like to provide some helpful information on the state and purpose of delivery. We can change the folder where our delivery resides, as well as the routing directory. On the next tab, Analysis, we can compute the labeled delivery code and execution folder during the delivery analysis. We can use personalized fields such as today’s date to dynamically create a label which can be useful for reporting and tracking. The Personalization tab provides a text hyperlink that opens a UI allowing us to change the name of attributes on a recipient. The Typology tab allows us to search and set the typology for a given delivery. Typologies are just a group of rulesets that get applied during the analysis, such as block listing addresses. The Delivery tab provides delivery properties such as delivery priority. This option allows us to influence the sending of orders by stating their priority level in the delivery. The Message Batch Quantity option allows us to define the number of messages grouped with the same XML delivery package. The Send Using Multiple Waves tickbox allows us to balance the load and we can divide deliveries into several batches. The Test SMTP Delivery tickbox tests a connection but it doesn’t send the email. And the Archive Emails tickbox saves your emails once they are executed. Retries allow us to set the time period for when we want retries to occur, if there is an error in the delivery, and the maximum number of retries. Moving to the Validity tab, we have the Validity Period. The Delivery Duration fields let us enter the limit for global delivery retries. This means that Adobe Campaign sends messages beginning on the start dates and then for messages returning an error, only regular, configurable retries are permitted until the validity limit is reached. On the SMTP tab, we can find configuration options related to the email protocol. This means we have options to enforce encoding and how to handle bounced emails along with additional headers. The Variables tab allows us to set up our custom variables, which are accessible from within our delivery. For example, we could create a text file in our workflow and then set it as a variable that we can reference in the attachment line. This results in adding an attachment in our email from our workflow. The Approvals tab helps us set up various approval phases and attach reviewers to the process. The final tab is the Advanced tab. Here, we can define a delivery outline and a service provider. A delivery outline denotes a structured set of elements created in a company and for the campaign. In the delivery, the outline will be referenced in the extraction file when sent to a service provider. Service providers, in a simple sense, are technology vendors that offer enterprise-level marketing. For this example, we do not need to change anything within these tabs, so let’s select Cancel. Once we are happy with the delivery, select Save. Looking at our workflow status, we are in the Being edited status. Once our workflow has been configured correctly, we will select the green Start button. This changes the execution status to Started. Let’s navigate to our campaign dashboard to view the active delivery. To the right, under Delivery, we have the option to open the Delivery dashboard. This is also the option for approval and to stop. These options are covered in more detail in subsequent videos. For now, let’s approve both the content and the targeting. You also have the option to stop this delivery if you so choose. If we select the Stop button to stop our delivery, it cannot be undone. We also have the option to cancel the entire campaign using the Cancel the campaign button in the top right, providing the campaign is still in progress. Let’s open the delivery window by selecting Open. A new window opens in the Summary tab. The Summary tab contains the characteristics of the delivery, such as the delivery status, the channel used, information about the sender, the subject, and information concerning execution. Here, we can see how many emails are going to be sent, how many have been processed, and how many have been successful. We can also see the status is in the Pending state, with it being ready for delivery. Before we continue, we can do some analysis on the results by selecting the Audit tab. Looking at the log, we are able to identify any errors or warnings, giving us a chance to fix these before we can proceed further. If we decide we are unhappy with the results of the status, we can cancel or stop the delivery, as I explained earlier. If we are satisfied with the results, we can confirm the delivery by selecting the Summary tab, followed by selecting the green Confirm Delivery button in the top right. Once confirmed, the option to pause or restart the delivery replaces the delivery button. Let’s navigate back to our campaign dashboard by selecting the Close button. Next, within our campaign dashboard, select Refresh. We can see the delivery status is still in progress. After hitting Refresh again, we can see a delivery is finished. Let’s open the delivery dashboard again. The summary page now displays that we have successfully processed the delivery of the emails. To get a brief overview of the results, select the Delivery tab. The Delivery tab provides the overall status of each email we sent, and we are able to filter by status using the Filter dropdown. We also have a Status dropdown, which allows us to filter on any status we want, such as Sent, Failed, Ignored, and many others. If we want some more detail on the results of a delivery, we can view them in the form of built-in reports. Select the Summary tab again, and select Reports on the top right. The email delivery reports are loaded. As an example, let’s look at the Delivery Throughput report. Once selected, this report displays a graph, visualizing the success and errors per hour given a specific period. You should now be able to execute your own campaign by starting workflows. Additionally, we looked at how we might perform monitoring, analysis, and looked at the available delivery properties. Thanks for watching.
