Create a Category

Before you add products to your catalog, you must establish the basic category structure of your catalog. Products may be assigned to zero or more categories. Categories are typically created in advance, before products are added to the catalog. However, you can also add categories “on the fly” while creating a product.

Hi, my name is Corey Gelato. I’m a Senior Commerce Strategy Consultant here at Adobe. In today’s video, I’m going to cover the category Admin View and how to create a new category. The initial view displays the top-level categories that are associated with my store. The inactive categories are the ones that are grayed out. For example, the Sales Event category I have here is currently set to inactive. When a category has sub-levels assigned to it, you’ll have the ability to expand. You could see this here with my Gear category. Has the plus sign, and, as I expand it, you could see my sub-levels. For the New category, I’m going to use the Gear category and create a subcategory associated. You could do this by clicking on that top-level first and then clicking Add Subcategory.
You’ll then add in your category’s name. So, for this example, I’m going to use VIP SALE. The other options that are available here is to Enable the Category as well as Include In Menu. I want to set both of these to yes 'cause I want my category to be enabled, but I also want my shoppers to be able to access it, so I want to include it in the menu.
For the Content section. This can be used to add banners, texts, or other CMS elements to the category.
For the Display Settings, I have the ability to have my Display Mode set to either Products only, Static Block only, or Static Block and Products. If you want the category page to include filter by attribute section, commonly known as the Layer Navigation, you’ll want to set Anchor to yes. You can also manage sort options available for this category as well.
For the Search Engine Optimization section, you’ll be able to complete and manage the SEO, specifically the metadata for the category, which includes Meta Title, Keywords, and Description. Please see our other video for products, and category, and merchandising.
And lastly, Category Permission is a feature for Adobe Commerce. Category access can be limited to a specific customer group or restricted entirely. -
